Welcome to BePrEPed
We are here to assist everyone and anyone to decide whether PrEP is right for them.
Whether you’re curious about PrEP, considering it for yourself or a loved one, or simply eager to stay informed, you’ve come to the right place.
The reason PrEP is becoming popular is because the government has set a target for 2030 of no new recorded HIV diagnoses.
What is PrEP?
PrEP, which stands for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a method to prevent getting HIV. It involves taking a daily pill that contains specific drugs used to treat HIV.
By taking this pill every day, people who are at higher risk of getting HIV can greatly reduce their chances of getting infected. In fact, when taken correctly, it can lower the risk of HIV infection by more than 99%.
The NHS provides free PrEP to individuals deemed at greater risk of HIV exposure. The best place to discuss your risk is either with us or your local sexual health clinic (sometimes referred to as a GUM clinic)- a list of sexual health clinics in Lancashire is available here. If you live outside of Lancashire, the NHS website has a full list of clinics across the country, which can be found here.

How does PrEP work?
Simply put it stops HIV from replicating in the cells. This prevents the virus from establishing itself inside the body. The pill includes two drugs originally utilized in HIV treatment. However, the preventative benefits soon became apparent and the American FDA approved its use back in 2012. Nowadays it is used all over the world to help prevent the spread of HIV.
